How it works

Simply download the True Flight approach software onto your home computer or laptop. This program will automatically download and save all approaches in the US. Next turn on and plug in your Garmin 296/396/496 or 696, the software will automatically recognize it. From that point all you need to do is select the approaches that you want to download to your Garmin and hit the send button.  The approaches are stored as routes on your display.  To select them in flight simply go in to your list of routes and select the required one.

This is a screen shot in simulation mode. To see a screen shots inflight click on the True Flight link at the top of the page.
Picture is shown in North up without aircraft due to it being in panning mode. In actual flight aircraft would be shown on the approach in real time.

On the picture above it is depicting the segment to HERMA is at or above 8400 feet and the next segment to ELOCA is at or above 6,880.

Garmin Approach Overlay FAQ’s

What will I see on the screen?

You will see all the segments of the approach along with the name of the waypoints and the minimum altitude required. As an example +724LECET is broken up into sections the + sign means at or above the three digits referred to the minimum altitude where you need to add one 0 so 724 would mean 7,240 feet, LECET would be the name of the waypoint on your approach chart. You will of course also see all the navigational information the Garmin provides when flying to anyway waypoint.

Doesn’t Garmin already have approaches on their handhelds?

No, they do not. It does have a tab that says approaches, and it will give you the names of the approaches at a particular airport as well as the final approach fix. But in no way does it give you all the actual segments of a real approach.

Will this be available on the Garmin Aera?

The Garmin Aera has a completely different interface that will not accept the approach overlay data.

What is the source of the charts and the overlay data?

The charts are NOS charts and the navigational data derived from the NOS charts is displayed on your main screen.

How many approaches can I can I load on my Garmin 296,396, and or 696?

Approaches are installed in your Garmin as standard routes, so the maximum number of approaches you can have per flight would be 50. Of course you will have full access to all US approaches (Alaska and Hawaii included) for one year as part of the subscription to download as many times as you want. Missed approaches are also available and can be transferred to your Garmin and they would count as one route as well.

It is certified for IFR approaches?

No GPS handheld, including this application is IFR certified.

Can you install approaches on any certified Garmin equipment?

No, the data can only be installed on portable GPS units.
